Max Weber Programme for Postdoctoral Studies The overall aim of the Max Weber Programme (MWP), the largest postdoctoral training programme in the Social and Human Sciences in the world, is to support the fellows in the development of a successful academic career. The most important benefits of the programme lie in the professional schooling it offers fellows. To this end they are affiliated with one of the EUI teaching departments, where they participate in seminars and workshops. 

USA:African Humanities Program 2012 for Sub-Saharan African’s

Fellowship support is in the form of stipends: $10,000 for dissertation-completion Fellows and $17,000 for postdoctoral Fellows, plus an additional $1,000 per Fellow for books and media. Fellowships are intended to release recipients from teaching and other duties for an academic year so as to permit fulltime research and writing. (They may be used to “buy time.”) Recipients of both kinds of fellowship are also eligible for further support in the form of a residency at a participating research center in sub-Saharan Africa for a sustained period of writing away from a Fellow’s home institution. IDB Merit Scholarship for PhD and Post Doctoral Research offered by Islamic Development Bank

Overview

The IDB Merit Scholarship Programme (MSP) is only for scholars from the member countries who are attached to their educational, scientific and technological institutions and research centres in their countries and are actively working in the scientific and technological development of their countries. However, a very small percentage is also allocated for Muslim communities in non-Member Countries. The IDB MSP awards scholarships to promising and renowned scholars as nominated and sponsored by their institutions and considered suitable and appropriate by the Offices of the IDB Governors of their countries in terms of the developmental and scientific needs of their countries. . Applicants for the IDB Merit Scholarship Programme should: Be upto (i) 35 years of age for Ph.D study and (ii) 40 years of age for Post-Doctoral research; Have the required academic background in the related field of science/technology listed under the Programme; Have above average ("Very Good") academic standing; Have work and/or research experience of not less than two (2) years for Ph.D study or five (5) years for Post-Doctoral research in the related field. Have a record of publications/research in the same field. Have a proposed field of study and/or research in one of the fields listed under the approved fields of study with its scientific and development relevance to the country being clearly demonstrated in a research proposal endorsed by the nominating institution. Applicants for post-doctoral research who have had a Post-Doctoral experience outside their countries within the past two years are not eligible.

Facility:

The scholarship covers all academic, institutional and living expenses including medical coverage and return air tickets. The Ph.D Scholars are additionally paid family allowances for spouse and up to 2 children.
Obligations
A. Candidates
Candidates granted the scholarship are expected to:
sign the Surety Bond prepared by the IDB stating their commitments to their studies, return to their countries upon completion of their studies and continuing work and services to science, technology and development of their countries thereafter for at least twice the period of their studies under the IDB Merit Scholarship Programme;

devote themselves to their studies on a full-time basis without interruption and provide the IDB with reports on their academic studies and activities on a regular basis;

seek or accept no other scholarship or remunerated work during their studies under the IDB Merit Scholarship Programme which may interfere with their studies or make fulfilment of their other obligations difficult unless otherwise agreed to in writing by the IDB;

respect the laws of the country of study and maintain good personal and professional conduct consistent with the rules, regulations and objectives of the IDB Merit Scholarship Programme and the overall mission of the IDB as an Islamic institution.

B. Nominating Institutions
As a partner with the IDB, the institutions nominating candidates for the IDB Merit Scholarship Programme are expected to:

nominate appropriate candidates, assist the nominated candidates with all aspects of documentation preparation and securing the necessary endorsement from the Office of the IDB Governor for the country;

assist the selected candidates in preparation of departure for study and allow them study-leave for the duration of the study;

help returning candidates to be resettled and support them with necessary research scope and facilities.

C. Offices of the IDB Governors/CPOs
As the channel of announcement and application for the Programme, the Offices of the IDB Governors / CPOs are expected to:

announce the Programme as widely as possible among the scientific and research communities in the country;

disseminate information and Application Forms to relevant scientific and research institutions and scholars in the country;

screen and pre-process applications to ensure eligibility and complete and proper documentation;

pre-select and submit to the IDB only those who are most qualified and in the proposed fields of study most needed for the development of the country.

Postdoctoral Research Grant in Activity Recognition and Object Tracking,Portugal

A research grant of type BPD is now open in the framework of project ARGUS – Activity Recognition and Object Tracking Based on Multiple Models, financed by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT), under the following conditions:

1. Activity duration:
1 year starting from January 1, 2011, under an exclusivity contract according to the FCT “Regulations for Advanced Training and Qualification of Human Resources” and Instituto Superiopr Tecnico (IST) grant regulations.

2. Objectives and summary:
The objectives of the work consist in the development of models and algorithms for recognition of human activities in video signals, using multiple motion fields and Bayesian estimation methods.

3. Scientific supervision:
This work will be done at ISR-IST, Lisbon, under the supervision of prof. Jorge S. Marques, researcher at ISR.

4. Qualifications and required educational level:
The required educational level complies with the specified by FCT for post-doctoral grants. The applicant should have a doctoral degree, preferably within the last 5 years, in the areas of Electrical
Engineering, Mathematics or similar with significant research work and publications in computer vision and statistical models.

5. Evaluation criteria:
Selection and ranking will be made according to the following criteria: 1) Ph.D. degree in Computer Vision or Statistical Modeling of Images (25%); 2) publication record in top computer vision journals (25%); 3) publication record in top scientific conferences (25%); 4) global evaluation by the jury (25%). Candidates must fulfil the conditions to start the grant, in particular non-nationals must have a
residence authorization at the time of proposal submission.

6. Salary:
According to the values stipulated by FCT “Regulations for Advanced Training and Qualification of Human Resources”.

Singapore:Nanyang DSO Postdoctoral Fellowship

The Nanyang Technological University (NTU) invites outstanding researchers with a PhD degree in science and technology to apply for the prestigious NDPD awards.

Key Features

The NDPD scheme provides selected young and promising scientists to conduct and lead research that is relevant to defence in Singapore/NTU. It offers:

Max Weber Programme for Postdoctoral Studies at European University Institute

The Max Weber Programme is Europe’s largest postdoctoral programme in the social sciences and humanities. It is funded by the European Commission (DG Education and Culture) and hosted by the European University Institute in Florence where the research community of professors, researchers and fellows provides an excellent environment for the Programme.

The Programme, open to all nationalities, is designed for junior post-docs who have received a doctorate in economics, law, history, social and political sciences, or a related field, within the last 5 years and who want to advance in their research and academic training, in an active multidisciplinary environment before entering the international job market, or in the early stages of their academic careers.

Fellows are selected on the basis of their research accomplishments and potential, their academic career interests, and the availability of the EUI faculty to provide mentorship.

Fellows are supported and encouraged to pursue their research agendas and participate in the research activities of the EUI, and in particular, the research activities of the Max Weber Programme and of the EUI Departments with which they are affiliated.


The Max Weber Programme, hosted in the beautiful Villa La Fonte, provides excellent research facilities, a range of activities to improve communication skills (writing, presentation and teaching), and actively supports Fellows looking for an academic job; for those interested, it offers a range of teaching-training possibilities (within the EUI, Florence and abroad), and it organizes multidisciplinary research workshops and discussions on different aspects of academic careers. Many of these activities are organized by the Fellows themselves. All these elements (see the Programme of Activities for more details) make the Max Weber Fellowship a unique and productive multicultural and multidisciplinary personal and intellectual experience at the beginning of a promising academic career.

As a service to the academic community at large – especially to those starting an academic career in the social sciences and humanities – the Programme hosts the Academic Careers Observatory

The Max Weber Programme offers 1- and 2-year fellowships. The annual deadline for applications for these Max Weber Fellowships is 25 October but please note that applications for self-funded fellowships are considered until 20 April.

Selection Criteria

The following criteria guide the selection of Max Weber Fellows:

Research accomplishments and potential. Research excellence is assessed on the basis of the candidate’s contributions (publications, PhD thesis, etc.) and other supporting evidence (i.e., letters of reference and research plan).

Academic career interests are assessed on the basis of the CV, the ‘Research and a academic career statement’ and other supporting evidence (i.e. letters of reference), with the aim of assigning Max Weber Fellowships to those candidates, satisfying the research excellence criteria and committed to an academic career, who can benefit the most from the Max Weber Programme, oriented towards the early stages of the post-doc academic career.

In addition the above two criteria, the capacity and availability of EUI faculty to provide mentorship is taken into account; however, while having common research interests may be helpful, it is not a necessity for mentorship.

Stipend
The basic stipend is € 2,000 per month.

Successful applicants who receive other grants or salaries must disclose this to the EUI. The amount of the fellowship will be fixed at a lower rate (minimum €1,250 per month) depending on the amount of the additional income.

If applicable, family allowances will be added to the basic stipend (see below).

Family Allowance

A household allowance of € 300 per month is paid to fellows with a partner if the partner lives with them in Florence and on condition that the partner's income is not over € 2,000 per month.

There is a dependants allowance of € 200 per month for each dependent child living with the Fellow in Florence.

Fellows are entitled to these allowances if they are not receiving any similar allowance from another source, and on presentation of relevant certificates (mariage certificate or equivalent, birh certificates).

A school or university certificate is required for dependent children in full-time education and over the age of 18.

The Whitaker International Fellows and Scholars Program sends emerging leaders in U.S. biomedical engineering (or bioengineering) to undertake a self-designed project that will enhance their own careers within the field. The IBM Center for Advanced Studies in Portugal (IBM CAS – Portugal) Funding At Doctoral And Postdoctoral Level

In accordance with the Regulations for Advanced Training and Qualification of Human Resources (http://alfa.fct.mctes.pt/apoios/bolsas/regulamento2010), the IBM Center for Advanced Studies in Portugal (IBM CAS – Portugal) opens a call for funding of individual grants of the following type:

Doctoral Grants (BD)
Post-Doctoral Grants (BPD)

These are one-year grants, renewable for up to total of three consecutive years, as long as interim evaluations are positive. The grants cannot be awarded for periods of less than one uninterrupted year.

Period of the Call

The call will be open from July 1^st to September 30^th and will include two evaluation cycles. The fist cycle will evaluate all applications sealed before 6pm on August 31^st, 2010. The second cycle will evaluate all applications sealed before 6pm on September 30^th, 2010.

Evaluation

Luxembourg:AFR Postdoctoral Grants 2010/2011 For International Students

Who Is Eligible?

• Applicants must be holders of a PhD diploma. They can apply until up to 8 years after obtaining their PhD.
• The postdoc research training has to be carried out in a different country from where the applicant has been principally working in the 24 months preceding the beginning of the intended postdoctoral funding period (mobility clause).
• Under the AFR scheme, early-stage researchers are eligible for the AFR PhD grant and consecutively for the AFR Postdoc grant (under the condition that they respect a mobility clause).

The AFR programme has no thematic limitations and is open to all researchers, regardless of their nationality, desirous to engage into research training in Luxembourg or abroad. In the selection process, the interest of the project in the context of Luxembourg R&D will nevertheless be evaluated.

Selection Criteria

The project proposals will be assessed according to the following key criteria :

• Scientific quality of the research project
• Profile of the applicant
• Quality of the host institution
• Interest of the research project in the Luxembourg R&D setting
