Project Details:

The transport industry continuously seeks design and manufacturing solutions that enable lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. This includes hybrid structures involving different material classes (steel, titanium, aluminium and magnesium) and different material forms (rolled sheet, castings, and laminates). This project will focus on novel friction joining technologies for dissimilar material systems (friction stir, friction stir spot, and ultrasonic welding). It is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, EPSRC, and is in collaboration with Manchester University Materials Science Centre.

The research in Cambridge will focus on development of process models for metal flow and heat flow in friction processing, using finite element analysis and computational fluid dynamics. Key challenges are:

- to develop and model a simple test rig to determine the material deformation response at the high temperatures and strain-rates characteristic of friction stir processing;

- to develop computationally efficient process models to optimise tool designs and welding conditions in dissimilar alloy joints;

- to develop a new process model for ultrasonic spot welding.

The Manchester group will be responsible for making the instrumented test welds on their in-house friction stir and ultrasonic welding machines, and for the detailed characterisation and modelling of microstructure evolution and interface reactions. Both groups will undertake mechanical testing of a range of joint geometries and material combinations.

The project will involve close collaboration with a current PhD student in Cambridge, and frequent visits to the project partners in the University of Manchester.

Background Required:

Applicants should have a 1st or 2.1 degree in Engineering, Manufacturing or Engineering Materials. Some previous experience of numerical modelling would be preferred.

Funding Source:

Standard EPSRC studentship (PhD or MPhil) including tuition fees for UK/EU students only (current tax-free maintenance stipend: £13,290 per year). Fully self-funded applicants of appropriate academic standing from outside the EU may be considered.

IARC - AUSTRALIA Postdoctoral Fellowship for Training in Cancer Research 2011-2012

Applications for a training fellowship in 2011-2012 are invited from postdoctoral scientists who are Australian nationals1, who intend to pursue a career in cancer research and wish to complete their training in those aspects of cancer research related to the Agency's mission and of priority for the Cancer Council Australia: to coordinate and conduct both epidemiological and laboratory research into the causes and prevention of cancer. Disciplines covered are: epidemiology (including genetic and molecular), biostatistics, bioinformatics, and areas related to mechanisms of carcinogenesis including molecular and cell biology, molecular genetics, epigenetics, and molecular pathology. There is an emphasis on interdisciplinary projects.

The Fellowship is tenable at the IARC in Lyon, France working in a research Group. The fellowship is for a period of one year, with the possibility of an extension for a second year subject to satisfactory appraisal. Candidates are required to have spent less than five years abroad (including doctoral studies) and have finished their doctoral degree within five years of the closing date for application or be in the final phase of completing their doctoral degree (M.D. or Ph.D.). The working languages at IARC are English and French. The Charles Wallace India Trust (CWIT) Scholarships 2011/2012 For The Indian Citizens

The Charles Wallace India Trust (CWIT) is an arts, heritage conservation and humanities scholarship fund. It enables Indians in the early or middle stages of their careers to spend time in the UK, helping to achieve their artistic, professional or academic ambitions and make wider international contacts.

Who was Charles Wallace?

Charles Wallace was born in Calcutta in 1855. He lived, worked and flourished there, founding the Shaw Wallace company ( though there are no connections between CWIT and the contemporary Shaw Wallace).

Charles Wallace died in 1916, bequeathing his modest fortune to his family for a generation and then for the benefit of those among whom he had made it.

About CWIT

In 1981, following an agreement between the Indian and British governments, CWIT was established as an English charity. It is run by four trustees, one nominated by the British Council. The trustees cover CWIT’s main areas of interest and are Ingval Maxwell, Dr Yasmin Khan, Caroline Douglas and Colin Perchard ( British Council nominee). The Secretary is Richard Alford.

In nearly 30 years CWIT has made around 2500 grants. British Council India advises on CWIT’s work and gives administrative support including guidance on applying for a visa.

KODIKARA Awards 2010 For South Asian Strategic Studies

The Regional Centre for Strategic Studies (RCSS) invites applications for research grants under the Kodikara Awards programme. The grants will be awarded to young South Asian scholars for conducting policy-oriented research on strategic and international issues of contemporary South Asian interest. Australia: Scholarships From Adelaide Scholarships International (ASI)

The University of Adelaide offers a scholarships scheme for international students undertaking postgraduate research study. Its purpose is to attract high quality overseas postgraduate students to areas of research strength in the University of Adelaide to support its research effort. The selection for scholarships is extremely competitive.Up to 10 prestigious scholarships may be available in the mid year round of scholarships for 2010 to outstanding international students from any country undertaking postgraduate research in any academic discipline.

The ASI provides:

1. Course tuition fees for two years for a Masters degree by Research and three years for a Doctoral research degree (an extension is possible for doctoral programs only);
2. Health insurance cover for students; and
3. An annual living allowance of approximately $22,250 (2010 value) for the normal duration of the program.

Applicants should hold at least the equivalent of an Australian First Class Honours degree. This is a four year degree with a major research project in the final year. Other criteria that will be taken into consideration is undergraduate performance, bachelor and honours awards and scholarships, other postgraduate degrees, publications in internationally refereed journals, the presentation of conference papers and relevant industry experience.

Applications for these scholarships are always highly competitive. Generally ASI recipients have completed a Masters degree including a significant research component and have several publications and relevant work and research experience.

Conditions

• ASI Scholarship will be awarded strictly on academic merit. Extra-curricular achievements will not be considered.
• Citizens and Permanent Residents of Australia, and citizens of New Zealand are ineligible.
• Those undertaking research via remote candidature are ineligible.
• International applicants are not eligible for an ASI if they have already commenced the degree for which they are seeking an award, unless they can establish that they were unable to apply for an ASI in the last round of the previous calendar year.

UN OHCHR Indigenous Fellowship Programme 2011 in Switzerland

Applications are invited for attending the 2011 Indigenous Fellowship Programme, which runs from 1-4 months for different languages (English, French, Spanish and Russian). During the Programme, selected Fellows will be based at the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Geneva, Switzerland. The Fellows will undergo interactive trainings on topics such as the work of OHCHR, the UN system and mechanisms etc.

Deadlines For Applications

Germany: Humboldt Research Fellowship 2010 For Postdoctoral Researchers

Brief Description

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation was established by Germany in order to promote international cooperation in research. The Humboldt Research Fellowship Program supports highly qualified post-doctoral scholars of all nationalities and disciplines so that they may carry out long-term research projects in Germany. There are no quotas with respect to country of origin or academic discipline.

Eligible Candidates

Applicants must have completed their first doctorate within the past four years. If you completed your first doctorate more than four but less than 12 years ago, you may apply to the Humboldt Research Fellowship for Experienced Researchers.

Fellowships are awarded based on the quality and feasibility of the proposed research project as well as on the international publications of the applicant.

Applicants design their own research projects and select their German hosts.

Applicants and proposed hosts must agree upon the research project and the time frame prior to the submission of the application.

Scholars in the humanities should have sufficient German proficiency to conduct the proposed research. Scholars in the sciences must have sufficient proficiency in English.


Amount Awarded

The Humboldt Research Fellowship for Postdoctoral Researchers provides for a stay of six to 24 months in Germany for research.

Monthly stipends are €2,250. Special allowances are available for accompanying family members, travel expenses and German language instruction.
