USA: John S. Marshall Memorial Scholarship 2010

Established in 2005 to further mining by affording educational opportunities by assisting worthy young students in the Mining Engineering departments of leading colleges and universities, which confer degrees in Mining Engineering. John Sidney Marshall, an AIME member throughout his career, came to us from Virginia via V.P.I. (BS degree in Civil Engineering) and a career of achievement and accomplishment as a mining engineer, specializing in the ancient and honorable mining of coal.

Eligibility

*Enrolled full-time in an ABET-accredited Mining Engineering program and will be a junior or senior undergraduate in the subsequent school year (after the award is presented)
*Demonstrated financial need
*No funds shall be provided for any one student for a period of over five (5) years
*Demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in the mining industry, e.g. extensive coursework, work experience, active in Member Society local chapter
*Student member of Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME)
*More than one candidate from the same department may apply

Nominations/Application

*By April 1st, AIME staff notifies schools of scholarship availability. Candidates must submit the following to AIME staff by June 15:
Completed application
*Two letters of recommendation (one from his/her department chair showing the applicant’s grad point average and class standing; one from another professor, employer, or person in the mining industry who knows the applicant well)

Nominations are forwarded to committee after June 15.
