Description
The Sir Neil Isaac Scholarship was founded in memory of Sir Neil Isaac (1915-1987) who had a lifelong enthusiasm for enhancing relationships between people and the environment. The scholarship was established by the Isaac Wildlife Trust in 1987, and on the Golden Jubilee of the Department of Geography.
Eligibility
The scholarship candidate will be required to undertake geographical research on the relationships between people and the environment as part of a Master's degree (by thesis or thesis and examination) in the Department of Geography at the University of Canterbury.

New Zealand:Development of electrocatalytic anodes for Alkaline Water electrolysers (PhD project)
Description
Funded project in the field of Chemical engineering, Materials Science, electrochemistry, Energy and Hydrogen

BE(Hons), BSc(Hons), ME, MSc (should have either a chemical engineering, physical chemistry or material science background)
Abstract
Water electrolysis is a reliable method of producing high purity hydrogen suitable for use in fuel cells or other industrial processes. In order to improve the efficiency of water electrolysers, the cell voltage must be decreased towards the theoretical potential of 1.48 V (thermo-neutral potential). In this project we aim to achieve this by applying thin electrocatalytic layers to low-cost nickel foam substrates. The electrocatalytic layer will increase the electrolyser performance in several ways [1]:
1. Increased surface area (more reaction sites per unit geometric area)
2. Increase electrocatalytic activity (exchange current)
3. Improved reaction mechanism
4. Improved gas - electrode -electrolyte interface
These electrocatalytic layers will be deposited using several methods. The standard method to deposit the oxygen evolution electrocatalytic layer will be by thermal decomposition [2-3]. This method has been applied to many electrocatalysts with great success due to the ease and controllability of the preparation method [4]. The second approach to deposition the anode and cathode electrocatalytic layers will be by electrodeposition. Cobalt oxide layers prepared by this method have shown good activity for the oxygen evolution reaction [5] and we believe the surface area (and thus performance) can be enhanced even further by using a templated electrodeposition process [6] to create a nanostructured oxide layer. Both the thermal and templated electrodeposition method can be carried out at industrial scale easily and cheaply.
The electrodes will be investigated using electrochemical techniques, electron microscopy, and x-ray diffraction. The electrochemical techniques will include cyclic voltammetry, half-cell polarisation curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). EIS is particularly powerful as we can assess the performance, surface area, ohmic resistances and any mass transport behaviour at the electrocatalytic layers while the electrodes are operating under industrial conditions. The performance and electrochemical behaviour of the electrode will be examined in standard aqueous electrochemical cells and in pilot scale water electrolysers.

What is the Arthington Davy Scholarship?

In October 2000, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation of Seattle, Washington, USA announced a donation to the University of Cambridge of $210 million to establish the Gates Cambridge Trust.
This benefaction creates in perpetuity an international scholarship programme to enable outstanding graduate students from outside the United Kingdom to study at the University of Cambridge. The Trustees are required to award scholarships on the basis of a person's intellectual ability, leadership capacity and desire to use their knowledge to contribute to society throughout the world by providing service to their communities and applying their talents and knowledge to improve the lives of others.
About the scholarships
The Trust expects there to be of the order of 230 Gates Cambridge Scholars studying at the University at any one time. Although there may be variation in the actual number of awards made each year, the Trust seeks to elect approximately 100 new scholars annually.
In selecting Gates Cambridge Scholars, the Trust looks for students of exceptional academic achievement and scholarly promise for whom advanced study at Cambridge would be particularly appropriate. The Trust expects a good match to be made between the applicant's qualifications and aspirations and what Cambridge has to offer. Successful applicants will have the ability to make a significant contribution to their discipline while in Cambridge, with a strong aptitude for research, analysis and a creative approach to defining and solving problems.

New Zealand:Murray King Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1998, as a memorial to the late Mr Murray King, who was a pioneer in the development of soil conservation programmes in the Wairarapa. The funds are provided from a Trust fund, contributed to by individuals, local and regional authorities, interest groups, and charitable organisations.
Purpose
The purpose of the award is to enable Wairarapa students to attend a New Zealand university and obtain degree qualifications, with particular emphasis on, but not exclusive to, soil conservation, soil and land management, indigenous forest management, and conservation management.
Selection Criteria
1.Students who have completed part or all of their secondary education in the Wairarapa, or who live in the Wairarapa at the time of applying for the scholarship are eligible. Wairarapa includes all areas under the administration of the Masterton, Carterton, and South Wairarapa District Councils.
2.Indicative graduate courses that may further assist potential applicants are:
BApplSci - majoring in Agribusiness, Agriculture, Forestry, or Natural Resource Management;
BSc - majoring in Agriculture Science
3.Preference will be given to students who are eligible to enter the third year and beyond, of an appropriate degree course, with applicable course subjects. Postgraduates are eligible to apply.

New Zealand:The Michael Baldwin Memorial Scholarship For Papua New Guinea At University of Waikato
Eligibility
This scholarship is open for application to students who are citizens of South Pacific nations. However, preference may be given to students who are citizens of Papua New Guinea.
Preference may also be given to applicants who can demonstrate a need for financial support in order to undertake tertiary study.
What is the Michael Baldwin Memorial Scholarship?
Michael Baldwin was a staff member at The University of Waikato at the time of his death in 2003. He had taught for a number of years in Papua New Guinea - at the institute currently known as the University of Goroka - before his appointment to the Centre for Foundation Studies (now part of the Pathways College) at The University of Waikato.
This scholarship commemorates Michael's commitment to teaching and to assisting others in their educational endeavours, and was made possible through the generosity of the Baldwin family.

The University determines the maximum number of scholarships available annually. For example, in 2007, approximately 40 Scholarships were offered.
The scholarship may be awarded to international students who display exceptional talent. For international students, the scholarship will cover the equivalent of the recipient’s tuition fees at domestic rates. It will be the responsibility of the student to pay the balance of their fees.
To remain in the programme, scholars will be expected to maintain a B grade pass average or better each year and meet a range of other requirements.
How to Apply?
Applications must be received by the University of Waikato Scholarships Office on the prescribed form by 31 October in the year preceding the intended year of study.
Applications must be accompanied by a portfolio. For further info on the application process check the Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship programme regulations for 2008.

New Zealand:International Education Finance Corporation Scholarships For US And Canadian citizen At University of Waikato
Eligibility
To be eligible to apply you must be either a US or Canadian citizen, or a foreign student with a co-signer that is a US citizen or permanent resident.
Students attending the University of Waikato can apply for funding from the International Education Finance Corporation (IEFC) through the ISLP Private Loan Program.
What is the International Education Finance Corporation?
The International Education Finance Corporation (IEFC) was established to fill a major void in education financing programs for international students. IEFC partners with the premier international loan guarantee agencies and lenders to make innovative, low cost education loans available to the thousands of students seeking the international education experience.
How to Apply?
Please check out the IEFC website for info about the application process.
There are no fees or costs associated with submitting an application form.
There is no deadline. Students should be advised to leave plenty of time to submit the application and required documentation so that funds may disbursed by school deadlines. Applications for past academic years are allowed only if the school will certify that past education related expenses are due.

The object of each scholarship is to enable a graduate of a university of New Zealand, who is of good character and who has shown an ability in physics or a combination of physics and mathematics, to undertake further advanced study or research whether in New Zealand or elsewhere, in Meteorology; or, should there be at any time or times no suitable candidate for an award of the scholarship for that purpose, then to undertake further advanced study or research in some other branch of science whether in New Zealand or elsewhere.

Microsoft NZ Research Internship Award Programme
The Microsoft NZ Research Internship Award was established in 2010 for the purpose of fostering collaborative research between the University of Canterbury and Microsoft Research Asia, facilitated by Microsoft NZ.
Eligibility
Be in the second year of their PhD enrolment at the University of Canterbury in the College of Engineering, College of Science or the School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics
New Zealand Citizen or Permanent Resident (unless otherwise agreed with Microsoft Research Asia & Microsoft NZ prior to the student submitting his or her application)
Work on a project that contributes to Microsoft Research Asia’s programme of fundamental research and is of interest to the student
Select a project area with a degree of difference from their PhD project
Suspend study/work on their PhD research topic during the tenure of the internship

Return economy flights from Christchurch to Beijing and travel and health insurance – University of Canterbury
Landed costs in Beijing (to include accommodation, food and local travel) – Microsoft Research Asia

The Dennis William Moore Scholarship was established in 1999 as a result of a capital donation to the University of Canterbury from the Estate of Dennis William Moore, a Minister of Religion of Hari Hari and an Electrical Inspector. The capital donation was used to set up the Dennis William Moore Fund.
