PhD Position in Music Cognition At University of Amsterdam

The PhD student will take part in the CSCA research programme: The role of neural plasticity in conscious perception and will be supervised by the principal investigator prof. dr Henkjan Honing and a postdoctoral researcher. This programme consists of three intertwined projects addressing the following three questions:

    • Does consciousness require synaptic plasticity?
    • Does perceptual learning depend on consciousness and not on attention?
    • Does conscious perception depend on previous learning of image statistics?

The PhD project will mainly contribute to the second question by studying hierarchical time perception in music. In addition, the project will be concerned with the computational modeling of the temporal aspects of music (such as rhythm, timing, and tempo) and the role of perception, attention, expectation and memory in music cognition. Next to computational modeling, we will use brain imaging techniques to identify global neural correlates of rhythm perception.

    • Information on the CSCA research programme is available here, and in a special issue of MindOpen (Dutch).
    • Information on how to apply is available here.

UK:PhD/MPhil in: Friction Joining for Low Energy Transport Applications At University of Cambridge

    Department of Engineering

    Vacancy Reference No: NA06599

    Limit of tenure applies*

PhD/MPhil in: Friction Joining for Low Energy Transport Applications

    (two positions)

Principal Investigator: Dr H R Shercliff

    Project Details:

The transport industry continuously seeks design and manufacturing solutions that enable lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. This includes hybrid structures involving different material classes (steel, titanium, aluminium and magnesium) and different material forms (rolled sheet, castings, and laminates). This project will focus on novel friction joining technologies for dissimilar material systems (friction stir, friction stir spot, and ultrasonic welding). It is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, EPSRC, and is in collaboration with Manchester University Materials Science Centre.

The research in Cambridge will focus on development of process models for metal flow and heat flow in friction processing, using finite element analysis and computational fluid dynamics. Key challenges are:

    - to develop and model a simple test rig to determine the material deformation response at the high temperatures and strain-rates characteristic of friction stir processing;

    - to develop computationally efficient process models to optimise tool designs and welding conditions in dissimilar alloy joints;

    - to develop a new process model for ultrasonic spot welding.

The Manchester group will be responsible for making the instrumented test welds on their in-house friction stir and ultrasonic welding machines, and for the detailed characterisation and modelling of microstructure evolution and interface reactions. Both groups will undertake mechanical testing of a range of joint geometries and material combinations.

The project will involve close collaboration with a current PhD student in Cambridge, and frequent visits to the project partners in the University of Manchester.

    Background Required:

Applicants should have a 1st or 2.1 degree in Engineering, Manufacturing or Engineering Materials. Some previous experience of numerical modelling would be preferred.

    Funding Source:

Standard EPSRC studentship (PhD or MPhil) including tuition fees for UK/EU students only (current tax-free maintenance stipend: £13,290 per year). Fully self-funded applicants of appropriate academic standing from outside the EU may be considered.

    Start Date: 1 October 2010 or 1 January 2011

DEL SAI(PfG) PhD Studentship At Queen's University Belfast (Project:MIMO Centric SoC Architectures)

    Overview

The proposed PhD project targets the derivation of new SoC signal processing architectures for processing complex MIMO algorithms, optimised for hardware cost, performance and power dissipation.

The convergence of mobile communications and Internet into "mobile-internet" has accelerated with the appearance of netbooks, smart phones and mobile multimedia devices. Emerging mobile broadband services are targeting the high-end online gaming and high-resolution streamed content. The significant increase in wireless and mobile bandwidth requires the deployment of sophisticated communication technology that can take advantage of time-, frequency- and space-division multiplexing methods.

OFDM and MIMO are emerging technologies enabling efficient utilisation of limited frequency bands for high data-rate digital communication. However, MIMO algorithms in particular are computationally complex and expensive, restricting its use for many battery-operated power-constrained mobile applications.

The aim of this research is to investigate power-optimised parallel signal processing circuit architectures for executing MIMO algorithms under resource constrained conditions.

    Objectives:

    * Investigate range of MIMO algorithms in terms of performance and computing cost
    * Decompose these algorithms into primitive control and arithmetic functions and investigate how these functions can be processed in time and space
    * Derive a new SoC baseband processor architecture for processing MIMO algorithms for resource constrained communication systems
    * Develop a proof-of-concept demonstrator based on state-of-the-art FPGA technology

    Academic Requirements:

A minimum of a 2.1 honours degree or equivalent in Electrical and Electronic Engineering or relevant degree is required.

Start Date: 1st October 2010 Duration: 3 years

    Admission requirements

The Norwegian universities and university colleges participating in the Quota Scheme have an English version of their website, where applicants can find more detailed information about the admission requirements for each course offered. Below are some general requirements.

Students usually apply for a degree course which is based on continuation of their studies in their home country, or a course which can be a joint part of a degree course in their home country ( joint degree or sandwich programmes). Most of the programmes are at the Master or Ph.D. level, but the Quota Scheme also offers certain professional studies.

Students must apply directly from their home country and must have stayed at least one year in their home country directly prior to the planned course of study at the Norwegian university/university college.

    Basic general requirements
All candidates should typically have the following basic qualifications:

    • Secondary school certificates
    • Minimum two years of higher education from your home country

Some exceptions apply for certain professional educational courses.

A list (GSU-list) has been compiled by the Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education (NOKUT) with the general entrance requirements for applicants with higher education qualifications from abroad. NOKUT is the Norwegian governmental organisation for recognition of foreign higher education. If you cannot find your academic papers on the list you may contact NOKUT to get an evaluation of your certificates.

    Basic English language requirements
English is the main teaching language of instruction in most of the educational programmes and degrees in the Quota Scheme. Applicants who are not native English speakers therefore must document their proficiency in English by passing one of the following tests:

    • TOEFL ( Test of English as a Foreign Language) with a minimum score of 500/ 550 (170 if computer-based)
    • IELTS ( International English Language Testing System) with a minimum score of 5.0 (6.0 if computer-based)

Please note that the requirements may differ, and in some cases be higher than described above.

    Basic Norwegian language requirements
A few courses in the Quota Scheme are offered in Norwegian and require good Norwegian language skills. Applicants who are not native Norwegian speakers therefore must document their proficiency in Norwegian by passing one of the following tests:

    • Bergenstest (Norwegian language test) with a minimum score of 450
    • Norwegian language course Level 3 with E as a minimum
    • Norwegian in the secondary school (The Teaching Plan for Norwegian as a second Language) written and oral, with a minimum score of 2

Admission to the Quota Scheme is highly competitive and meeting the minimum requirements is no guarantee for enrolment. Please refer to the International Office at each university/university college for more detailed information about admission requirements.

    Application procedures

If you are interested in applying for a course/programme under the Quota Scheme, please read carefully the information on this page.

The Quota Scheme as a rule only enrols students from institutions which have collaboration agreements with Norwegian universities or university colleges. Norwegian institutions usually do not admit free movers (individual applicants) to this scheme. Only in very special cases can free movers be considered. Please contact the Norwegian institutions for individual information.

To find out which institutions collaborate with Norwegian institutions, please refer to the websites of the Norwegian institutions.

Students who come to Norway as self-financed students will, as a rule, not be considered as being qualified for the Quota Scheme.

    Who handle the applications?
The Norwegian Centre for International Cooperation in Higher Education (SIU) is not the admission office for prospective quota students. The institutions of higher education that are part of the Quota Scheme are handling all applications from prospective students, and at no time is SIU involved in the admission process. Thus, SIU cannot answer questions from individual students regarding applications, courses, recognition of papers, etc.

Where do I find the application form?
Applications forms are available from the websites of the universities and university colleges. All applications should be sent directly to the International Office at the university/college to which the student applies.

    Application deadline

The deadline for applying for the Quota scheme is usually December 1 every year. Some courses and educational programmes may have other deadlines than the this. Please contact the International Office at the university/college to which you want to apply for detailed information.

The Letter of Admission is normally sent to the successfull candidate by April 15 every year. Accepted students will also receive relevant practical information about studying in Norway.

Guide to minumum academic eligibility criteria for all University of Adelaide undergraduate scholarships

For Australian Year 12 students the basic TER will be used. Bonus points will not be counted.

Those who have commenced tertiary studies at the time of application will not be eligible.
    4. Applicants from education systems where one year of degree studies in their home countries is required for admission to the University of Adelaide first year degree studies must apply before commencement of their second year of studies. Those who have commenced second year studies at the time of application will not be eligible.

    6. Citizens of Indonesia, Korea, Thailand and Vietnam only are eligible for any of the above scholarships in 2011.
    7. Candidates who have applied for Australian permanent resident status are ineligible to apply.

    Enrolment Conditions

    1. Scholarship holders must commence study at The University of Adelaide in 2011. By negotiation, an applicant offered a scholarship scheduled to commence in Semester I, 2011 may defer until Semester II, 2011 if there is a Semester II commencement of their chosen program of study. If the applicant is not able to commence in Semester II the scholarship offer will lapse and will not be available to the applicant in 2012.
    2. Candidates are required to enrol in The University of Adelaide as ‘international students’ and must maintain ‘international student’ status for the duration of their enrolment in the University. The scholarship will be terminated if a student changes their residency status.
    3. Scholarship holders are expected to enrol in a full time load. A scholarship holder who is considering reducing his/her enrolment load must first consult with staff in the International Student Centre. International students are expected to complete their programs within the duration specified on their visa. The University may only extend the duration of study under compassionate or compelling circumstances.
    4. Undergraduate scholarships are available for up to four years, subject to satisfactory progress. The University reserves the right to terminate scholarships of students who do not maintain satisfactory progress. Satisfactory progress is defined as the achievement of a GPA (Grade Point Average) of 5 (out of 7).
    5. Where a student fails, or withdraws from courses in a given semester (or equivalent teaching period) such that the semester GPA (Grade Point Average) is less than 5.0 in two consecutive semesters, the student will be deemed to have failed to maintain satisfactory academic progress and the scholarship will be terminated unless the University is satisfied that exceptional circumstances exist.
    6. If a student faces exceptional circumstances requiring him or her to return home, he/she may apply for a one year deferment of enrolment without loss of scholarship, provided this is approved under the student visa requirements.
    7. In order to make a case for exceptional circumstances, a student will need to provide a detailed statement and independent supporting documentation e.g. a doctor’s certificate etc.
    8. If a scholarship holder enrols in more than the standard load of 24 units per year, or in courses which increase the tuition fee beyond what is indicated in the scholarship offer letter, or enrols in courses at another institution, he or she shall be responsible for the payment of the additional tuition fees.
    9. Students who complete a three-year degree may apply for an additional year, in an Honours program, but extension of the scholarship for the fourth year is subject to the decision of the relevant faculty.
    10. The scholarships cover the amount of tuition fee indicated in the scholarship award letter for up to four years of study at the University of Adelaide. The scholarships do not cover the costs of visas, Overseas Student Health Cover, travel, accommodation, living expenses, books and study materials or any other expenses associated with living in Adelaide or study at the University of Adelaide.
